Entitlements (or how to get my bailout)
With all the talk about bailing out those who weren’t able to make their mortgage payments (5%-10%) by those who do (90%-95%) and whether that is “fair” or not, let us remind ourselves: this society has always been about helping those in need. But, what we have turned into is more of a nation of hand outs instead of a nation of hand ups. There was a time when we could honestly tell the difference and weren’t afraid to say so. Now, in this politically correct charged environment of today, we are increasingly not free to call it like it is (I would use the old phrase “calling a spade a spade” here, but that would be politically incorrect).
We used to say “if you practice unsafe sex you will increase your chance of getting a communicable disease or becoming pregnant”. Now we say “use a condom” and “sex in any form is just another expression of love between two consenting adults”. We now offer treatment for the “disease” (whether it is viral or fetal). Also, in the past if someone was pregnant out of wedlock, we discouraged that behavior and pointed to the ideal: marriage, then children. Now, we are on the verge of celebrating it as “just another choice”. In 2007 we had the largest birth rate in forty years, but within those births, the out of wedlock percentage approached 40%!
So we now approach people who took out mortgages they knew they could not pay as “victims” of the “evil” lending institutions, even though the federal government “encouraged” the lending in the first place, under the “lifting all boats” mentality. Most certainly, this was not the normal way we did business not so long ago. But, in the name of “fairness”, we have changed our behavior (attitude) towards the “disadvantaged” and lent them the money (backed by the government (read: taxpayers) and, as a result, the economy is in a tailspin, accelerated by the collapse in the housing market. We have, in effect, overstepped our moral boundaries and thrown the god of money at every situation we used to resist and speak out against. In a nutshell: we have reaped what we have sown (sorry about the un-PC statement; maybe I should have said “the chickens have come home to roost”).
At any rate, is anybody upset or “offended” at the biblical principles that have worked so well for the first 200 years of our nation’s history? Well, not to worry because it appears that, the one thing that has worked so well in the past and can truly help us get back on track today is the one thing that is currently “politically correct” to attack: Judeo-Christian principles. And if this “war on terror” succeeds, you ain’t seen nothing yet!
We truly will either worship the Creator or the created and, as a result, find out where our real bailout is.
