By way of introduction:

I am not an expert with multiple degrees and a bunch of letters after my last name.  What I am is an everyday guy that has spent the last 35 years of my life as the sole provider for my family with a stay at home wife.  We entered into that agreement together and it has worked very well.

You might also be surprised to know that we’ve raised and homeschooled eight children during that time.  As a result, we have been blessed to learn some things along the way regarding debt and what it is all about.  I don’t claim to have all the answers but I do feel that I have something to offer that will be of a tremendous help in turning your financial ship around.

Now that I am retired, I have found a new passion: to share with 20 /20 hindsight some of the pitfalls that can come with making financial decisions that affect both that time of life when raising a family and that time of life when the family is grown and gone.

First and foremost, I am passionate about avoiding debt as much as possible.  I am also a realist.  Some debt is inevitable.  I am also aware that there is a place for government in our financial lives.  Areas such as Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, to name a few.  These are in place and funded by our tax dollars to be drawn from in our retirement years.

There are also other government programs, such as food stamps and unemployment benefits that are also paid for with our tax dollars, meant to be a stop gap while seeking another job.  Unlike the Big Three already mentioned, these were never meant to be permanent.

Thus you will see the occasional rant against too much government as it pertains to finances.  And this is by design to encourage you to see government as a hand up and not a hand out.

It is my sincere hope and desire that you will gain from the insights contained within this little blog of mine, and that you will also experience the liberating feeling that comes from being able to successfully manage your finances, even if you (like me) aren’t a financial guru with a doctorate in money matters.
